A MESSAGE FROM BUKOWSKY TO ACTORS

Each performance is a new begining and has nothing to do with any of the preceding ones. We all start from zero every day. And of course, it has nothing sacred. The world can live much better without theatre than without plumbing. And in many countries there is very few of both, of course I would rather live without plumbing, but I am sick.

Nothing will stop a man from acting unless that man stops himself, if a man really wants to act he will. Rejection and ridicule won’t do but make him stronger and the more he is suppressed, the stronger he will become, just like a mass of water against a dam. There is no possible failure in the theatre; it will make your toes laugh while you sleep, it will make you run like a tiger, it will brighten your eyes and will put you face to face with death. You will die as a fighter, you will be honored in hell. The luck of the theatre, go with it, send it. Be a clown in darkness. It is fun, it is fun. One more scene....
